Purpose
We are a community organization that hopes to build collaboration amongst JSD staff, city staff, business and nonprofit leaders, STEM professionals, and non-conformist thinkers to create change. We are gathering a group of people who want to think outside the box to help Juneau citizens become outside of the box thinkers and doers.
We aim to:
- Help Juneau citizens become outside-of-the-box thinkers and doers.
- Prepare children for 21st century multi-disciplinary and evolving STEAM careers
- Develop scientific literacy
- Expand creativity, critical thinking and problem solving confidence and skills .
Objectives
We believe that all students should have significant learning experiences involving meaningful integrated projects, connections to the community outside the school, and access to emerging technology. As a coalition, our goals are to:
- Create a permanent STEAM Committee in Juneau
- Champion and support STEAM activities for K-12 in the Juneau School District
- Facilitate collaborations between educators and STEAM experts
- Raise community awareness about the value of and demand for STEAM education, mindset and activities
- Increase participation and success of underrepresented groups in STEAM experiences
- Enhance STEAM experiences through real-world projects
- Advocate for STEAM experiences and education in Juneau and statewide
- Learn from and acknowledge that the LingĂt way of life has always been STEAM
- Work toward systemic change: Support, encourage, brainstorm, explore creative structures for systemic change that supports culturally responsive pedagogy
