Planning a STEAM Event at Your Local School

STEAM Events are an invigorating and effective way to bring together community STEAM experts, teachers, families, and, especially, students to support students’ curiosity, confidence and competence in STEAM disciplines.

STEAM nights are engaging, flexible, family-centered events that can be tied to a variety of grant and school improvement goals including literacy and place-based education. Our coalition includes members from NOAA, Sealaska Heritage, Discovery Southeast, and JSD, and we can help ensure that the event is in line with existing/required activities!

STEAM days are an opportunity to offer activities during the school day so that all students and teachers can participate. Sayeik Gastineau, for instance, piloted “STEAM at Sayeik” last year in their gym in which all classes were able to cycle through.

The Juneau STEAM Coalition can work with your school to recruit presenters/volunteers, suggest and refine activities, and prepare certain supplies. We maintain a database of STEAM volunteers interested in working with the schools, as well as ideas and materials for activities. Here are links to:

— a folder of sample letters, surveys, flyers, schedules, etc. of past STEAM events to get you started

Two notes on scheduling

  1. The Coalition is most able to support events that occur between November and early April as the Coalition and our supporting organizations (like NOAA) will be focused on SeaWeek(s) from mid-April through mid-May.
  2. This is the most recent (Feb. 16, 2024) schedule we have of STEAM events planned for the 2023-24 school year:

Please reach out to us at juneausteamcoalition@gmail.com with more dates, questions, or suggestions. We look forward to hearing from you and supporting your staff and students!
